Not many people know who I am in my industry of Search Engine Marketing. It’s no wonder, as I have never been one to try and make a big splash or create a lot of noise…but, I think it’s time. After seeing the industry filled with those that say they have the know-how, but they never really back up their results – giving false information, having a lack of integrity and just plain selling the sizzle without the steak – I could no longer stand to sit on the sidelines.
For many years, 10 to be exact, I managed and operated many of my own lead generation companies. There was never the need to take on SEM clients. The truth is, why would a SEM/Lead Generator who had a successful business not just continue doing do it for themselves? So, that may send a red flag up the next time you are look at hiring an SEM. Now, why the sudden change of heart from me? Why come out now to help companies succeed online? Simply put, I am running another type of business, one that takes struggling companies and turns them into online marketing machines…anything from local business promotion to national events. My story may not be exciting just yet, but back before there was Facebook or Twitter – and long after they are gone – my internet footprint will still be found.
Now, my story really begins in 2001 when I launched my first online marketing campaign, generating leads for the credit counseling industry and others. Under the helpful eye of my mentor, I was able to gain success. Years later, in 2005, I started an online mortgage lead generation business with a few colleagues. With just a $1500 investment, we took that to over $3.6 million yearly gross revenue in just 2 years’ time. I personally think it’s a great start-up story, maybe not amazing by some standards, but based on pure lead generation efforts, not bad.
So, there was no seed money from a venture capitalist, no mortgaging my house, just working smarter – and harder – than our competition. I soon was in charge of taking out the top spots in Google for mortgage related keywords and did so. Time and time again the competition fell, even big banks, like Bank of America. Keep in mind; it’s not always about how much money you have, it’s about who you have behind that computer. That is why I always excelled past my competition; I am a triple fold weapon – creative, analytical and extremely competitive. In our second year, we had a growing office of 10 employees and we worked hard and had fun. Then, the Mortgage industry as you know took a hard hit, a very hard hit. In 2008, seeing the collapse was coming, we sold our sites and Google AdWords account and got out. For 3 years it was a great ride and I loved every minute of it.
I stepped away from the lead generation business for a bit; my focus went away from mainstream PPC/SEO/SEM to concentrate on new web properties. Now I am back with a renewed desire to grow your business past humble beginnings, or increase your already thriving SEM efforts into new highs.
